Vastlakukkel (Semla bun in Swedish, Laskiaispulla in Finnish) is a traditional Northern European whipped cream filled cardamom bun baked to celebrate Shrove Monday or Tuesday. Traditions vary a bit between countries, but in most the celebration involves longest possible sled slide. Belief was, that it would help the harvest of flax, which meant better linen.
Vastlakukkel or Semla buns, are always topped with whipped cream. Every eater must get their nose creamy at least once! Jams and marzipan cream are often added to the filling as well.
Our Vastlakukkel (Semla buns) are usually filled with jam and whipped cream, sometimes whipped cream is mixed with some farmers cheese. The choice of jams we use depend on availability, but here are some of our favorites: black currant, black currant & blackberry, red currant, sour cherry, lingonberry, and rosehip. Our Semla buns might have some poppy seeds in them as well:). Please ask if you wish your Semla buns with no jam and only with whipped cream.
